金正恩近日怒嗆川普，「會以火來懲罰美國瘋狂的老糊塗」。對此，北韓外長李勇浩表示，「可能代表北韓要在太平洋進行氫彈測試爆」。如果屬實，這也將觸動美國的底線，但究竟有多嚴重？麻省理工專家表示，「若平壤的計畫出現意外...就很可能會演變成一個改變世界的事件。」

據《路透社》報導，加州明德大學蒙特雷國際研究學院(Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey)資深研究員Melissa Hanham表示，「北韓提到太平洋大概就代表平壤打算發射導彈飛越日本，來讓任何質疑他們的人閉嘴。」

韓國國防安全論壇(Korea Defence and Security Forum)資深研究員Yang Uk表示，這意味著，北韓會發射攜帶彈頭的火星-12型或火星-14型洲際彈道飛彈飛向太平洋，並在上空數百公里處引爆。

Yang Uk強調，雖然他們很可能只是在吹牛，但北韓的確需要測試飛彈與炸彈結合的能力，平壤當局很可能早就做好相關的計畫了，而現在只是用川普的發言來做為行動的藉口。

麻省理工學院政治學副教授Vipin Narang表示，「我們必須假設他們會這樣做，這是極度挑釁的；歷史上，讓一枚導彈載著氫彈飛越人口稠密地區的次數，可以說是僅有幾次，屆時，如果北韓的導彈有任何一點沒有照計畫走，就會演變成一個改變世界的事件。」

Narang指出，如果在海洋上的測試高度夠高，是能夠限制輻射塵的影響的，但是還是很有可能會造成大規模的EMP（電磁脈衝）破壞區，而這也是平壤暗示可能會對美國或其友邦所做出的襲擊。」

報導表示，其他專家指出，盡管飛彈是一個最理想的載具，但北韓也很可能用船隻載送的方式在水面或水中進行試爆；無論哪種方法，輻射塵的影響都可能很嚴重，也會引起來自世界各地的反彈。
